Javascript errors appear with a yellow triangle in popup box often with text offering to debug. These are usually generated due to a problem with the javascript embedded in the web page. Javascript errors can also appear in software programs that use javascript in their code. For example, DreamWeaver uses javascript heavily making it vulnerable to javascript errors.

In many cases, the errors indicate a conflict with the code on a page, or a bad installation of a program that relies heavily on JavaScript. If you are receiving JavaScript errors when working with a program such as DreamWeaver, try reinstalling that program. Then go to the developer's website in search of the latest updates. Their tech support page may even list known issues such as JavaScript errors and offer detailed steps to follow.

Other scripting errors when browsing the internet can be caused by problems in a web page's HTML source code but they could be related to your browser's settings. For example, Active scripting, Java applets, or ActiveX controls could be blocked on your computer. In addition, Internet Explorer or another program, such as a firewall or an anti-virus program, can be configured to block Active scripting, Java applets and ActiveX controls.

You may also receive scripting errors because anti-virus software is configured to scan Temporary Internet Files or the Downloaded Program Files folders.

The scripting engine, internet-related folders, video card drivers, or DirectX components could be corrupt or outdated causing scripting errors.

Steps for Troubleshooting Scripting Errors:
1. Verify a webpage by using another browser, or even another computer, to see if you get the error. If the problem shows up on other computers, it's likely the problem is with the webpage itself.
2. Verify your settings to see if you are blocking Active Scripting, Java applets and ActiveX controls. You can reset Internet Explorer to its default levels by going to Tools, Internet Options, Security and then choosing Default Level.
3. Double check your anti-virus program to be sure it is not scanning your temporary internet files and downloaded program files.
4. Remove all of the temporary files and cookies from your PC by clicking the General tab found under Internet Options. Click Temporary Internet Files, choose Settings, click Delete Files, click OK and click Delete Cookies.
5. Turn off features you don't need such as Smooth Scrolling which could interfere with scripting. To do this, go to Internet Options, choose Advanced, and find Smooth Scrolling in the list. Clear the check box.
6. Install the current DirectX version which will improve graphics, security, and performance of your Windows Operating System. You can find DirectX at the Microsoft website.
7. Update to the latest scripting engine from Microsoft. The current version is 5.6. If you have a pre-Windows XP operating system, you can download an update from Microsoft. (Note: Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 both already have version 5.6 installed. Repairing this scripting engine on these two platforms is a last resort and requires a reinstall of Windows.)
